When it was first established the orphanage consisted of a small number of unsuitable temporary mud and stick structures.
These buildings served as the school and as housing for the children and staff. There were no basic amenities.
The children slept on the floor with little or no bedding and very few had adequate clothing.
They rarely had enough to eat and to make it worse most of the children suffer from malnutrition, malaria and many other complaints.
