Pit Latrine
Hands of Love Orphanage and School has only one very old pit latrine to serve 310 children and the staff. The pit latrine had been previously condemned, but is still in use due to the children and staff having no other option.
During the recent visit of a medical team to the orphanage in Feb 07, an assessment of risk of infection was carried out on site. The pit latrine was identified by the medical staff as one of the major causes of many of the illnesses that are very regularly suffered by the children and staff.
Hands of Love UK are desperately trying to raise the 2100 pounds needed to build an adequate toilet block for the orphanage. We aim for this to be achieved during 2007.
